Looking after you hair in the lead up to your Wedding day

Tuesday, April 10th, 2012

How to get your Hair in the right condition for your Wedding day is a question we get asked by our Brides all the time…..

The majority of Brides are growing their hair so that they can have as many choice in choosing the Perfect Wedding day style.  Getting your hair in excellent condition isn’t something that you should just think about in the last week before the Wedding.  If you want that lovely smooth hairstyle, then it does take time and planning.  Yes, your hair artist can use shine sprays, and pomades to help you hair look polished, but the colour, cut and condition are just as important.

If you are not sure of your hairstyle choice then it is better to keep growing your hair as you can always cut your hair after you have your Pre Wedding trial.

Another factor to consider is if you are a blonde, and thinking of having an upstyle or down hair style, as extra styling product is added the hair can look darker than what is normally is…so you may like to have extra highlights.  Normally upstyles are created on hair that is least one day pre washed, so that the hair isn’t too soft and flyaway to create the upstyle, this also contributes to the lighter hair colours looking darker than wheat they normally would.

Think about if your hair is going to be all up and how much of the back or nape of your head is visible as to if you need to have extra colour, eg more foils added.  Foils may be better built up over a few appointments so that they don’t look too thick or like a block colour.

It’s also not advisable to change your hair colour dramatically too close to the Wedding, eg changing from blonde to dark, not only may this be to much of a shock it may also be not the best for the condition of your hair.

A treatment program is a great idea in the lead up to the Wedding day…especially a treatment after your colour in the salon can have the most impact, as your hair cuticle layer is open and in the optimum condition to impact your hair.  A home treatment program is also advisable.

The Powder Room has two hairstylists, Karen and Carlie who can look after your Pre Wedding hair care if you would like to come in see us in the lead up to your Wedding day.  We can also help you with advice about what type of hairstyle that may suit you, you may like to view our Real brides Gallery on our website..

Inspiring hair looks from the 2012 Oscars

Wednesday, February 29th, 2012

The 2012 Oscars was truly another great evening of glamorous fashion and beauty….and the stylists at The Powder Room love to see how the celebrities have their hair and make up…

We loved Emma Stone’s red carpet look, the colour of her dress was complimented perfectly with a subtle hint of rose petal shadow on her lids.  The simple effortless swirlee bun at the back was stunning, especially as Emma’s hair colour is a statement in itself.

Berenice Bejo, from “The Artist” is another gorgeous chic redhead…and look really is a simple braid and a low textured bun..we love the way the braid lifts of the face…creating that perfect silhouette, showing of Berenice’s stunning face shape…we could really see this look being a Bridesmaids favourite.

Penelope Cruz’s look for the Academy Awards was so refined and romantic, softly waved and hair pinned into a faux bob…The look was completed with the 50′s diamond cluster earrings. Penelope’s eyes were softly smokey in matt tones and nude lips…

Tina Fey’s look was kind of old Hollywood with a modern twist, the essential part is to add in a hairpiece to create this voluminous updo!

Noosa Wedding…with The Little White Wedding Company

Friday, January 13th, 2012

Erin’s Wedding was in September last year at Castaway’s Beach at the Sunshine Coast and our talented Prue and Paula look after Erin for her Wedding day hair and make up.  The grils had so much fun spoiling the girls in the most picturesque location overlooking the beach.  The house was located on a private property and the girls the day with a relaxing stroll oolong the beach.  The Bridesmaids decorated the Wedding night room with a trail of chocolates and flowers to set the mood.  Erin was then of to spend their honeymoon in Europe.

The Wedding was coordinated by Victoria at The Little White Wedding Company. Amazing photography was by Feather and Stone.

Erin’s look for Makeup was airbrushed to ensure that the makeup last all day and night!  All of the girls had Airstocking applied to their décolletage areas for a more flawless skin finish…

The girls all had a super smokey feel with full bar lashes for extra drama!!…The girls were also bronzed to look sunkissed.

Erin’s hair really worked well for a beach Wedding, soft low and romantic…it looked effortlessly classic.

The Bridesmaids hairstyles were similar except softly to one side and incorporating a soft braid.

A question we get asked a lot is….

What is Airbrush Foundation?

Airbrush foundation is a water-based, oil-free and long wearing makeup that is applied through an airbrush, using a small air compressor. It is usually used for high definition film.

As it is applied, it feels like a mist hitting your face and dries into a smooth, flawless finish that feels very light on the skin. It is long wearing, non-transferable, and ideal for high heat,  humidity, weddings and dancing all night!

It is especially good for people with oilier skin, or blemished skin as it tends to stay put longer.

What is the difference between Airbrush and Traditional Foundation?

With a combination of the techniques used by our makeup artist,  long wearing foundations, primers, and setting sprays – the same long wearing effect can be achieved with traditional makeup.

If you prefer a very “dewy” look, traditional makeup may be the way to go. Airbrush foundation is a slightly more matte look.

As with any makeup medium, we can control the coverage from sheer to full coverage with both airbrush or traditional foundations.

Ultimately, it is what you feel most comfortable with and the type of finish you would like.

X Factor Grand Final Great Hairstyles

Tuesday, November 22nd, 2011

Hi Girls,

We were watching the X Factor Grand final last night and just had to put a blog up about Natalie Bassingthwaighte and Mel B’s hairstyles!

We just looooved Nat’s soft vintage style side knotted bun especially with the bold red lip, she looked like she just stepped out of the pages of Vogue magazine! What a gorgeous idea for a wedding day hairstyle!!

And Mel B’s hair is always fab but the smoothness and simplicity of her high set chignon last night was so perfectly coiffured and allowed her gorgeous accessories  to do the talking. A great idea if your looking for something on trend for your big day or would be perfect as a bridesmaids hairstyle!

What do you think girls, did they get it right last night with the hair and makeup styling?

Looking forward to seeing what they come up with for the decider tonight :)

Emma’s Wedding day Hair & Makeup

Friday, August 12th, 2011

We just love receiving beautiful thank you letters from our gorgeous brides, it gives us such a buzz to know that we helped in making their day absolutely perfect!

Emma was married on 25th June and had the fabulous Megan and Jacqueline pampering her and her girls on the day, how gorgeous do they all look!

Hello Powder Room.

I had my wedding hair and make-up done on the 25th June this year by Megan and Jac at the Emporium.

I have to say that they were absolutely amazing.  They knew exactly what I was after and I couldn’t have wished for a more perfect job.  The girls and my mum all looked fab and I think I end up pretty lovely myself.  Haha.

I have attached some pictures from the photographer to showcase the wonderful work they did.

Kind Regads and a big thank-you for making my day so pretty.

Wedding day Bliss with beautiful Wedding hair!

Thursday, July 28th, 2011

Allison was married on the 26th March this year and we were so excited to receive these beautiful Photo’s of the amazing Wedding day hair styles that kayla created for the girls.

Alison’s Bun hairstyle is such a statement hairstyle and lasts all day. It is also the type of hairstyle that you can wear your veil either above or below and adding in hair jewels or flowers is so easy. Bun styles can be made messier but still keeping the structure of the look. Braids and waves can also be incorporated into the look as well.

The Bun hairstyle can be created using a hair padding, to help create the shape. If your hair isn’t long enough you can also add in a hairpiece…shhhhh don’t tell anyone, it’s our secret.

Kim Kardashian’s Vera Wang Wedding Dress(es!) ~ Our Hair & Makeup Prediction for her Big Day

Thursday, July 7th, 2011

It is rumoured that the larger-than-life Kim Kardashian is having not one but TWO perfect wedding dresses designed by the amazing Vera Wang. She has met with the designer in New York and again in LA. Vera Wang was also the designer for Kim’s sister Khloe’s dress for her wedding to Lamar Odom in 2009 so they are already well known to each other. Khloe has said of the designer working with her sister – ‘I love her, and I feel like when you think of weddings, you think of Vera Wang. I think it would be a perfect fit”, according to the Daily Mail.

Below are a few images that are predictions for Kim’s wedding day dress(es!) :)

While Kim is sweating it out in the gym with her TWO personals trainers to fit into her TWO gorgeous dresses, let’s take a moment to imagine what hair and makeup look she may choose for her big day.

Kim is famous for her smoky eyes. luscious long lashes and signature nude lips. She is also a big fan of the NARS blush in the amazing peachy-pink colour “Orgasm”.

Here are a couple of gorgeous hair and makeup styles which we predict may be her chosen wedding day look:-

Glowing, nude bridal makeup with a soft smokey eye, understated yet elegant and classic-

Or will she choose a more 1950s pinup girl style makeup with bold lips and more natural eyes like below? She has mentioned her bridal look will have a 50s twist so our bets are on a look like this :)

For her wedding day hair will she choose an elegant upstyle like below…?

Or a glamourous retro downstyle..??

Only time will tell but us girls at the Powder Room are eagerly awaiting the first images of the blushing bride as she walks down the aisle any day now!
