Looking after you hair in the lead up to your Wedding day

Tuesday, April 10th, 2012

How to get your Hair in the right condition for your Wedding day is a question we get asked by our Brides all the time…..

The majority of Brides are growing their hair so that they can have as many choice in choosing the Perfect Wedding day style.  Getting your hair in excellent condition isn’t something that you should just think about in the last week before the Wedding.  If you want that lovely smooth hairstyle, then it does take time and planning.  Yes, your hair artist can use shine sprays, and pomades to help you hair look polished, but the colour, cut and condition are just as important.

If you are not sure of your hairstyle choice then it is better to keep growing your hair as you can always cut your hair after you have your Pre Wedding trial.

Another factor to consider is if you are a blonde, and thinking of having an upstyle or down hair style, as extra styling product is added the hair can look darker than what is normally is…so you may like to have extra highlights.  Normally upstyles are created on hair that is least one day pre washed, so that the hair isn’t too soft and flyaway to create the upstyle, this also contributes to the lighter hair colours looking darker than wheat they normally would.

Think about if your hair is going to be all up and how much of the back or nape of your head is visible as to if you need to have extra colour, eg more foils added.  Foils may be better built up over a few appointments so that they don’t look too thick or like a block colour.

It’s also not advisable to change your hair colour dramatically too close to the Wedding, eg changing from blonde to dark, not only may this be to much of a shock it may also be not the best for the condition of your hair.

A treatment program is a great idea in the lead up to the Wedding day…especially a treatment after your colour in the salon can have the most impact, as your hair cuticle layer is open and in the optimum condition to impact your hair.  A home treatment program is also advisable.

The Powder Room has two hairstylists, Karen and Carlie who can look after your Pre Wedding hair care if you would like to come in see us in the lead up to your Wedding day.  We can also help you with advice about what type of hairstyle that may suit you, you may like to view our Real brides Gallery on our website..

If you would like to visit our salon for the first time then we would like to give you a gift of $25 of your first visit:)  Check out our pricing PDF

Carlie has been with The Powder Room as a Wedding hairstylist for 2 years now and is always soooo excited about her Brides, she loves to hear stories of how her Brides met their Grooms, and loves…looking at their engagement rings:)  Carlie is also great with ensuring that you aren’t in the salon all day having your hair done. We know you are busy and even though you love having our hair done, you also want to fit lots of other things into your day especially when planning your Wedding too!!

Karen is the owner and creative director at Powder Room, and has been hairdressing for 25 years.  Karen has many clients that are previous Brides that keep coming back after their Wedding day.  It is especially lovely when we start to see little babies being born:)  Karen specialises in Blondes and looking after the condition of your hair in the lead up to the day.

Noosa Wedding…with The Little White Wedding Company

Friday, January 13th, 2012

Erin’s Wedding was in September last year at Castaway’s Beach at the Sunshine Coast and our talented Prue and Paula look after Erin for her Wedding day hair and make up.  The grils had so much fun spoiling the girls in the most picturesque location overlooking the beach.  The house was located on a private property and the girls the day with a relaxing stroll oolong the beach.  The Bridesmaids decorated the Wedding night room with a trail of chocolates and flowers to set the mood.  Erin was then of to spend their honeymoon in Europe.

The Wedding was coordinated by Victoria at The Little White Wedding Company. Amazing photography was by Feather and Stone.

Erin’s look for Makeup was airbrushed to ensure that the makeup last all day and night!  All of the girls had Airstocking applied to their décolletage areas for a more flawless skin finish…

The girls all had a super smokey feel with full bar lashes for extra drama!!…The girls were also bronzed to look sunkissed.

Erin’s hair really worked well for a beach Wedding, soft low and romantic…it looked effortlessly classic.

The Bridesmaids hairstyles were similar except softly to one side and incorporating a soft braid.

A question we get asked a lot is….

What is Airbrush Foundation?

Airbrush foundation is a water-based, oil-free and long wearing makeup that is applied through an airbrush, using a small air compressor. It is usually used for high definition film.

As it is applied, it feels like a mist hitting your face and dries into a smooth, flawless finish that feels very light on the skin. It is long wearing, non-transferable, and ideal for high heat,  humidity, weddings and dancing all night!

It is especially good for people with oilier skin, or blemished skin as it tends to stay put longer.

What is the difference between Airbrush and Traditional Foundation?

With a combination of the techniques used by our makeup artist,  long wearing foundations, primers, and setting sprays – the same long wearing effect can be achieved with traditional makeup.

If you prefer a very “dewy” look, traditional makeup may be the way to go. Airbrush foundation is a slightly more matte look.

As with any makeup medium, we can control the coverage from sheer to full coverage with both airbrush or traditional foundations.

Ultimately, it is what you feel most comfortable with and the type of finish you would like.

Ask karen @ The Powder Room about…..Mother of the Bride Wedding day Hair and Make up

Wednesday, January 11th, 2012

Your Mum has looked after you for years and now it’s your Wedding day and you are the centre of attention, but you also want to make sure that your Mum is spoilt as well.

We have so many occasions where Mum’s say after they have their hair and make up professionally done…”Wow, I’ m so glad that I did choose to be booked in as well, and I have really enjoyed the experience”…

Your Mum may feel that the day is all about you and she don’t want to make a fuss…or she may think that having their makeup down may make them look older or your Mum  has had the same hairdresser for years and think it would be easier to have it done with someone they are familiar with….

You may like to visit our facebook page to view the most up to date pictures of our Bridal parties.

Some tips in helping you plan your Mums hair and make up are..

* Your Mum may like to come into the Powder Room salon to have a haircut or co our in the lead up to the day, then we can help guide Mum with the Wedding day look…a change can be great too.

* You are still you! So choose a hairstyle that embraces  the general qualities in what you like to look like.  Don’t go for drastic change for example if you are 100% grey, don’t have a full head colour, choose some highlights to work with your tone of grey.  Make sure you have more time in the lead up to the Wedding may, take the time to get to know your stylist, try to go to the same stylists a few times in the lead up to the big day, look for an artist that LISTENS to who you are!  Check out our Powder Room salon prices at our New Farm based salon.

* Looking after your Mums skin care regime as well…hydrating facials and oxygen plumping treatments can help the look of the foundation on the Wedding day…it’s a good excuse to spoil Mum more.

* Make up application is best applied with make up brushes, using a foundation brush really helps the foundation be buffed into the skin and not just sit on top of the skin.  Preparation of skin is also essential, using smoothing serums and primers, to ensure the foundation lasts.

*Guess what Mum’s can have airbrush make up too!! It is always relative to skin type, so chat to your artist.

* Light reflecting concealers and powders are also amazing to ensure the most flawless finish.

*Eyebrows are considered the border of your face, so don’t forget to have them groomed prior the the Wedding day and making sure that you have them done a few days prior so that all redness has disappeared.  Correct brow make up application can even lift the eyes.

* Don’t be afraid of a few individual temporary lash extensions on the Wedding day as if the correct size is chosen for your Wedding day they can really open up your eye shape.

*And one last final tip…. don’t hesitate, if you would like to secure The Powder Room for your Wedding day hair and make up fill out our online Booking form today and secure your date with a deposit, chat to one of our friendly coordinators today.

Introducing Laura… Bride-to-Be

Thursday, October 27th, 2011

Hi beautiful brides-to-be,

I just wanted to introduce myself, my name’s Laura and I’ve just started working at The Powder Room as one of the Wedding co-ordinators, I’m also a makeup artist…and coming up in March, I too, will be walking down the aisle…makes me get goosebumps just thinking about it!!!!!!

It’s such a crazy, emotional and exciting time in our lives and if you’re anything like me, you’ll want your day to be perfect!! When I’m looking at vendors for my wedding I’m always looking to see if they actually get as excited and caught up in the joy of my wedding as I do. My best experiences are with the people that actually share my joy. I’m getting so excited about finding the perfect flower or the right fabric for my dress, trivial little things that just mean so much to me now! One of the things that I LOVE is how the girls at The Powder Room are just so passionate about weddings, they just adore us brides! They genuinely care, which I’m finding, is quite hard to come by. You should see the cupcakes they provide at their Cupcake Consultations or this delicious Turkish Iced Rose Tea, it makes my mouth water just thinking about them! :-)

When I’m talking to people that are going to help out with my wedding, for some reason, I always worry about consistency. I don’t want to be explaining myself, and what I want, over and over again. That’s one of the awesome things about The Powder Room, you have the same stylist for your trial and your wedding day. It makes me feel so at ease knowing that I’m going to have the same amazing stylist who knows my face and hair from my trial to do the same breathtaking job at my wedding. Most days are bad hair days for me…so having someone who knows how to tame my hair and make it look beautiful really puts me at ease. I would just like to look like a better version of me!! I still want my fiance to recognise me when I walk down the aisle. ;-)

Also…The Powder Room are amazing to talk to, trust me, I’ve been picking their brains about all things wedding! They’re just a wealth of knowledge and always happy to have a chat. They actually have time to talk to us rather than sounding like they are in a hurry. I can understand that there are a lot of wedding suppliers out there that are owner operators, but it’s nice to know that I can contact the girls on phone, email or come in to see them at the Powder Room Boutique Studio at New Farm…. Anyway, as a bride-to-be, I can wholeheartedly recommend that you try The Powder Room experience, it really is an experience that you shouldn’t miss out on!!

Some of the things I think are special about Powder Room!!

- Cupcakes…of course!! (compliments of Cakes by Judy C)

- The Powder Room Promise, as the trial is THE most important part…did you know they spend three hours with you for a hair and make up trial?

- So many gallery images and real bride updates on the facebook page weekly, and pictures of the backs of hairstyles too!!

- My stylists only look after MY wedding on MY special day….phew that makes me feel so much better.

- They can travel to me on the day or I could decide to escape everyone and come to The Powder Room Studio.

Happy wedding planning,

Laura xxx

Wedding day Bliss with beautiful Wedding hair!

Thursday, July 28th, 2011

Allison was married on the 26th March this year and we were so excited to receive these beautiful Photo’s of the amazing Wedding day hair styles that kayla created for the girls.

Alison’s Bun hairstyle is such a statement hairstyle and lasts all day. It is also the type of hairstyle that you can wear your veil either above or below and adding in hair jewels or flowers is so easy. Bun styles can be made messier but still keeping the structure of the look. Braids and waves can also be incorporated into the look as well.

The Bun hairstyle can be created using a hair padding, to help create the shape. If your hair isn’t long enough you can also add in a hairpiece…shhhhh don’t tell anyone, it’s our secret.

For more ideas for Wedding hairstyles check out our Powder Room website gallery images.  You may also like to join our facebook page to be kept up to date with the latest.

avatarHello Girls at the Powder Room,
I just wanted to send a quick email thanking you for your help with my wedding on the 10th December 2011. It was the most perfect day (despite the rain). We had Bernie come out to do our makeup. She did an amazing job and we were all incredibly happy with our makeup! So a HUGE thankyou to Bernie - our wedding would not have been the same without her there to beautify us all!
