Tanning for Weddings…Tips & Advice

Tuesday, January 31st, 2012

We are always asked by our brides-to-be, “Should I get a spray tan for my wedding day?” or “What do I need to know/think about when organising a tan for the day?” So here are a few tips from one of our stylists who is a tan-professional :-)

How do I plan the perfect spray tan for my wedding day?

Everyone has seen an unattractive spray tan, no one wants to look orange on any day but especially not on your wedding day!  The first step is to prepare your skin for your spray tan – using an exfoliating glove, exfoliate your skin every day for seven days prior to your spray tan; moisturise your whole body as often as possible (dry patches will go darker); do all hair removal at least 24 hours before your spray tan to ensure that your pores close before the spray tan is applied.

How do I rinse my tan off?

Have a luke warm, 30 second shower or until the water runs clear, don’t use any body wash, run your hands over your body very quickly to avoid water run marks, pat dry with a towel from head to toe, do not moisturise after your first shower (especially if it is an express tan).

How do i know if the product/brand will be appropriate for my skin tone and type?

There is a huge variety of tanning products on the market and choosing the correct product for your skin can be tricky.  Tanning products are available in various “base” colours for example, green, purple and red.  The spray tan consultant will analyse your skin and determine which base is best suited to your skin, aiming to counteract your natural pigment.

How do i keep my spray tan lasting and avoid patchiness?

It is important to moisturise as much as possible after your tan has developed and been rinsed off (not within 12 hours of getting your tan).  Hot water and chlorine dry out your skin so it is best to avoid these for the week after your tan.

What questions should i ask my spray tanner?

Spray tans are now available in 8 hour or express tans, ensure that you know which tan you are getting so that you know when to rinse it off.  Ask what it should look like before and after rinsing and what to do if you make a smudge in the tan before rinsing.

What else do i need to know?

Spray tans do not contain SPF protection so don’t forget to apply sunscreen! It is best to have your spray tan done two days before your wedding or special event.  Remember to relax while your spray tan is developing, avoid activities that cause you to sweat or get the spray tan wet.  Wear dark, loose clothing without a bra after having your spray tan applied.

Noosa Wedding…with The Little White Wedding Company

Friday, January 13th, 2012

Erin’s Wedding was in September last year at Castaway’s Beach at the Sunshine Coast and our talented Prue and Paula look after Erin for her Wedding day hair and make up.  The grils had so much fun spoiling the girls in the most picturesque location overlooking the beach.  The house was located on a private property and the girls the day with a relaxing stroll oolong the beach.  The Bridesmaids decorated the Wedding night room with a trail of chocolates and flowers to set the mood.  Erin was then of to spend their honeymoon in Europe.

The Wedding was coordinated by Victoria at The Little White Wedding Company. Amazing photography was by Feather and Stone.

Erin’s look for Makeup was airbrushed to ensure that the makeup last all day and night!  All of the girls had Airstocking applied to their décolletage areas for a more flawless skin finish…

The girls all had a super smokey feel with full bar lashes for extra drama!!…The girls were also bronzed to look sunkissed.

Erin’s hair really worked well for a beach Wedding, soft low and romantic…it looked effortlessly classic.

The Bridesmaids hairstyles were similar except softly to one side and incorporating a soft braid.

A question we get asked a lot is….

What is Airbrush Foundation?

Airbrush foundation is a water-based, oil-free and long wearing makeup that is applied through an airbrush, using a small air compressor. It is usually used for high definition film.

As it is applied, it feels like a mist hitting your face and dries into a smooth, flawless finish that feels very light on the skin. It is long wearing, non-transferable, and ideal for high heat,  humidity, weddings and dancing all night!

It is especially good for people with oilier skin, or blemished skin as it tends to stay put longer.

What is the difference between Airbrush and Traditional Foundation?

With a combination of the techniques used by our makeup artist,  long wearing foundations, primers, and setting sprays – the same long wearing effect can be achieved with traditional makeup.

If you prefer a very “dewy” look, traditional makeup may be the way to go. Airbrush foundation is a slightly more matte look.

As with any makeup medium, we can control the coverage from sheer to full coverage with both airbrush or traditional foundations.

Ultimately, it is what you feel most comfortable with and the type of finish you would like.

Ask karen @ The Powder Room about…..Mother of the Bride Wedding day Hair and Make up

Wednesday, January 11th, 2012

Your Mum has looked after you for years and now it’s your Wedding day and you are the centre of attention, but you also want to make sure that your Mum is spoilt as well.

We have so many occasions where Mum’s say after they have their hair and make up professionally done…”Wow, I’ m so glad that I did choose to be booked in as well, and I have really enjoyed the experience”…

Your Mum may feel that the day is all about you and she don’t want to make a fuss…or she may think that having their makeup down may make them look older or your Mum  has had the same hairdresser for years and think it would be easier to have it done with someone they are familiar with….

You may like to visit our facebook page to view the most up to date pictures of our Bridal parties.

Some tips in helping you plan your Mums hair and make up are..

* Your Mum may like to come into the Powder Room salon to have a haircut or co our in the lead up to the day, then we can help guide Mum with the Wedding day look…a change can be great too.

* You are still you! So choose a hairstyle that embraces  the general qualities in what you like to look like.  Don’t go for drastic change for example if you are 100% grey, don’t have a full head colour, choose some highlights to work with your tone of grey.  Make sure you have more time in the lead up to the Wedding may, take the time to get to know your stylist, try to go to the same stylists a few times in the lead up to the big day, look for an artist that LISTENS to who you are!  Check out our Powder Room salon prices at our New Farm based salon.

* Looking after your Mums skin care regime as well…hydrating facials and oxygen plumping treatments can help the look of the foundation on the Wedding day…it’s a good excuse to spoil Mum more.

* Make up application is best applied with make up brushes, using a foundation brush really helps the foundation be buffed into the skin and not just sit on top of the skin.  Preparation of skin is also essential, using smoothing serums and primers, to ensure the foundation lasts.

*Guess what Mum’s can have airbrush make up too!! It is always relative to skin type, so chat to your artist.

* Light reflecting concealers and powders are also amazing to ensure the most flawless finish.

*Eyebrows are considered the border of your face, so don’t forget to have them groomed prior the the Wedding day and making sure that you have them done a few days prior so that all redness has disappeared.  Correct brow make up application can even lift the eyes.

* Don’t be afraid of a few individual temporary lash extensions on the Wedding day as if the correct size is chosen for your Wedding day they can really open up your eye shape.

*And one last final tip…. don’t hesitate, if you would like to secure The Powder Room for your Wedding day hair and make up fill out our online Booking form today and secure your date with a deposit, chat to one of our friendly coordinators today.

She did an amazing job and we were all incredibly happy with our makeup! So a HUGE thankyou to Bernie - our wedding would not have been the same without her there to beautify us all!
